BREAKING: Buhari seeks $5.513bn Loan Approval From Reps

The  President, Major Genera l Muhammadu Buhari has written to the House of Representatives to request for the approval of fresh external borrowings totalling $5.513bn. Buhari, in the letter read by Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, at the plenary on Thursday, said the funds were for 2020 budget deficit, financing of critical projects, and some states of the federation. The President also presented a revised 2020 Appropriation Bill and 2020-2022 Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper. The National Assembly had recently approved a loan of N850bn for the Federal Government, while another of $22.79bn, which the Senate has already approved, is pending before the House.

BREAKING: Saudi Arabia Reopens Mosques May 31

Saudi Arabia will end its nationwide coronavirus curfew from June 21, except in the holy city of Mecca , the interior ministry said Tuesday, after more than two months of stringent curbs. Prayers will also be allowed to resume in all mosques outside Mecca from May 31, the ministry said in a series of measures announced on the official Saudi Press Agency . The kingdom , which has reported the highest number of virus cases in the Gulf , imposed a full nationwide curfew during Eid el- Fitr, the Muslim holiday that marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan . The ministry said it will begin easing restrictions in a phased manner this week, with the curfew relaxed between 6 am and 3 pm between Thursday and Saturday. From Sunday until June 20, the curfew will be further eased until 8 pm, the ministry added . The Minister Of Education Revealed Schools May not resume on 8th June 2020 as so many are saying, the minister of education said that there's no exact day for school resumption just that the government is planning on how to reopen schools in June 2020. Due to the rumours going round that school would reopen on 8th June, the Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, has disclosed that there are plans for schools to reopen nationwide, but it won't be in two weeks time and probably it may still not be on 8th June as so many people assumed that definitely schools will resume on 8th June. The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, on Thursday said COVID-19 patients, who spent a long period at isolation centres were at the risk of depression. Ehanire, who stated this in Abuja at the press conference of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, said government planned to deploy psychologists in isolation centres to take care of such patients. At the press conference, the Director General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, said the task force was reluctant to adopt home treatment it once proposed because of conditions under which Nigerians live. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has revealed it is considering Madagascar’s COVID Organics for a clinical observation process. This was made known by the President of Madagascar, Andry Rajoelina in a tweet on Wednesday. The leadership of the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) has said it would call off its industrial action if progress is made on key areas, including revitalisation fund, lecturers-earned allowances and funding of state universities. This is coming as the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) yesterday threatened to begin strike in all federal universities, polytechnics and Colleges of Education when schools resume if nothing was done to address its grievances. Against the background of the demand by the federal government for ASUU to call off its strike before resumption of the next phase of negotiations, ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, said the union is ready for negotiations, but that the suspension of the strike would be dependent on how the federal government responses to its key demands. Moderna, the biotechnology company leading effort, made the announcement on Monday. The first COVID-19 vaccine to be tested on humans has produced positive initial results. Moderna, the biotechnology company leading effort, made the announcement on Monday, 18th May.  Stéphane Bancel, CEO of Moderna, said this was based on the results of an initial clinical trial involving eight human test subjects, who were given two doses of the vaccine mRNA-1273 back at the start of March.   The healthy volunteers then produced antibodies which, when tested in human cells, were found to be able to stop the virus from replicating. The P res idency has said that the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari ( retd.), will not make any broadcast on COVID -19 updates today. Buhari’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, made this known on Monday afternoon via his official Twitter handle. He wrote : No presidential broadcast on COVID-19 updates today. None was planned. Rather, the Presidential Task Force will during its usual  media briefings bring the nation up to speed on the next steps.

IPPIS: FG Directs ASSU To Suspend The Ongoing Strike Immediately.

THE Federal Government, yesterday, called on the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to suspend the strike and return to the classroom to manufacture drugs for the cure of the COVID-19 pandemic. It pointedly told the union to suspend the industrial action, began in March despite universities being under closure as part of plans to combat the spread of COVID-19 pandemic, before the resumption of negotiations.
